The Tokyo governor's candidate has vowed to cancel the Olympics if he wins the election
Taiwan Yamamoto, the leader of the Reyna Sinsen Gul party, has announced his candidacy for the post of governor of the capital of Japan. TASS reports that the main point of the candidate's program is to cancel the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which will take place next year. "I have decided to run for governor of Tokyo. In the first point of my election program, I mentioned the cancellation of the Olympic Games. "Given the current situation in the world regarding coronavirus, it will not be possible to hold games next year," he said.
The election of the governor of Tokyo will take place on July 5. Incumbent Governor Yuriko Koike has previously announced his second nomination. He is supported by the Liberal Democratic Party.
The Tokyo Games Organizing Committee has officially called for clarification of next year's competition format. It is planned that they will be organized on the basis of three basic principles: to create a safe environment, to minimize the necessary expenses by the residents of Tokyo, as well as to simplify the format of the Games to make them safe. According to the Japan Organizing Committee, the Olympic Games, which have been postponed until next year, should become a symbol of global unity and rebirth after the end of the epidemic. The Tokyo Olympics were to be held from July 24 to August 9, 2020. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the competition was postponed for a year and will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The parties agreed that before the start of the Olympic Games, world sports will not be able to avoid the shocks associated with the spread of coronavirus. In this case, the name "Tokyo 2020" will be retained.
